The Historic Ski Hill in Leavenworth, WA
Located just outside of downtown Leavenworth one can find what is simply known as Leavenworth Ski Hill. They offer lots of fun outdoor activities; downhill skiing, snowboarding, tubing, ski jumping, nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and fat biking. For those who don’t know what fat bikes are (I didn’t) they are an off-road bicycle with oversized tires for riding through the snow. I found an informative site at https://fat-bike.com.
Leavenworth Ski Hill is also the location of a very cool historic lodge, Ski Hill Lodge. It’s a spot where one can enjoy hot chocolate and snacks. It was built in 1936 and we found it rustic and very cozy. On one of the walls you will find black and white photos of a bygone era, in which you can see people enjoying the hill like they still do today. Ski Hill is listed on the National Register for Historic Places. You can read a bit more about that at http://www.nps.gov/nr/feature/places/13000505.htm.

There are no equipment rentals at Leavenworth Ski Hill, but you can go to one of any number or rentals spots in town. If you decide on tubing, they are provided at Ski Hill. We decided on tubing and really enjoyed it. You sit on the tube and the rope tow pulls you up quickly. The staff member at the top detaches you from the rope tow and away you go! The hill is 100 feet. The conditions on the day we were there made for some VERY fast sliding. It was super fun and you can even rent out the whole thing for a private party. Although we didn’t personally go on the ski hills, they are easily visible and we saw that both were very gentle and short. The smaller of the two in particular looks like a great place to learn how to ski if you’ve never done it before as it had a very low grade. Both hills had tow ropes, so you don’t need to climb to the top! The staff was very friendly, and the setting is gorgeous. So strap on some skis or pop onto one of their inner tubes and have some fun! For more information on tickets, location and times, visit their website at https://www.skileavenworth.com.
